Getting started
Do I need my exact birth time?
The rising, setting, overhead and underfoot lines all depend on the time you were born, so a more exact time gives a more exact map. You can start without one. If you only know roughly, enter your best guess and the map is still worth exploring. Check your birth certificate if you can, since it is often more reliable than memory.
What if I don't know my birth time?
Choose "I don't know my exact time" when you add your chart. You get two options. The Mirror asks three short questions to estimate your rising sign and sets an approximate time. Or you can use noon as a placeholder. Noon is only a stand-in, so your rising sign, houses and the angle lines (AC, DC, MC, IC) are less reliable. Planet signs and most of the rest still read fine.
My chart looks an hour off. What do I check?
Enter your birth time as the clock showed where you were born. We work out the timezone from the birthplace, and the form shows what it picked, for example "Resolves to UTC-5 on this date". If your birth record says standard time but daylight saving was applied, pick a fixed UTC offset in the timezone picker. Births before about 1966 can be harder to place. If it still looks wrong, email us your birth details and we will look.
What is astrocartography?
Astrocartography draws lines on a world map showing where each planet was rising, setting, overhead or underfoot at the moment you were born. A city on your Venus rising line feels different from one on your Saturn overhead line. Your chart does not change, but the place changes which parts of it come forward. The full beginner's guide is in Learn.
What is free and what is paid?
Free gives you the full map for the ten planets, Human Design power lines, the Chart Lab, one chart and three saved places. Premium adds full interpretations, the scored heatmap, extra line types, five charts and 25 saved places. Pro adds practitioner tools such as Presentation Mode, unlimited charts and places, and high-resolution export. Current prices and the full list are on the pricing page.
Do I need to know Human Design to use the Human Design features?
No. Every Human Design line is labelled with its gate, channel and center, and the reading explains what it means in that place. It helps to have your chart, but the built-in guides start from zero. Switch between Astro and Human Design at the top of the map.
Is the astrology written by AI?
AI fits a library of carefully written meanings to your chart. Those meanings come from named, written astrological traditions, applied the same way every time, so you can see where a statement comes from. Positions come from real ephemeris data, never from a language model.
How accurate is the data?
Planet positions come from NASA/JPL's DE440 ephemeris, the one used for spacecraft navigation. They agree with NASA's live Horizons service to within a tenth of an arc-second, and we re-check that every hour. House cusps and other derived values carry the usual slightly wider tolerance of any astrology software.
Is there an app for my phone?
Yes. ELA Map is on the App Store for iPhone and Google Play for Android, and it also works in any phone or desktop browser. Sign in with the same account everywhere and your charts and plan follow you. The get-app page sends your phone to the right store.
Reading your map
What do the AC, DC, MC and IC lines mean?
Each planet draws four lines. AC is where it was rising, DC where it was setting, MC where it was overhead, and IC where it was underfoot. Rising and overhead tend to be the loudest. Tap any line on the map to read what that planet does at that angle in that place.
What is the "ASP" label on a line?
ASP marks an aspect line, a line drawn where a planet makes an aspect, such as a square or trine, to an angle. The line's title spells it out, for example "Sun Sqr. MC". Aspect lines are a Premium overlay, and in the line filters you can show all of them or only the flowing or the tense ones. Turn them off if the map feels busy.
What do "CCG — Natal" and "CCG — World" mean?
CCG is cyclocartography: lines that move with the sky. CCG Natal shows where a transiting or progressed planet is exactly on an angle for your chart. CCG World shows where planets are crossing the four angles right now, the same for everyone. A line with a × in its name, like "A × B", is two lines meeting at that spot.
What is cyclocartography?
Cyclocartography draws your transits and progressions on your map, using the same method as your birth lines but for another date. Your birth lines stay fixed and these lines move, so the map answers when as well as where. World is the shared sky for the day. Personal uses your progressed planets plus today's outer planets.
Why is my Lilith different from another app?
There are two Black Moon Liliths. Mean Lilith is the averaged point, and True (osculating) Lilith is where it falls on the Moon's actual orbit at that moment. Same meaning, a different place, and apps pick different ones. Premium readers can choose Mean, True or both in Account, under Preferences and Points. Lilith itself is a Premium body.
Where is the geodetic map?
Geodetic is an overlay on the main map, not a separate page. Open Layers, then Overlays, and switch on Geodetic Grid in Astro mode or Geodetic Gates in Human Design mode. The gates overlay is free.
How do I remove a saved place?
Open the place in My Places, then choose Remove. You are asked to confirm, and removing it frees up a slot. The free plan holds 3 saved places, Premium 25, Pro unlimited. You can also set any place as your home from the same screen.
Why does my rising sign change when I look at another place?
Your planets never move. A new place tilts the angles, so your rising sign, houses and which planets sit near an angle can all change. That is relocation astrology, and it is what the map is showing you. Seeing the same rising sign in two places usually just means they sit at similar angles.
Account and billing
I can't sign in. What can I do?
You can sign in with an email link, an email and password, or Google. If you forgot your password, use the reset link on the sign-in page. Check the spelling of your email, and look in spam for the link. Still stuck? Email us from the address on your account. This works even if you can't sign in, and a person reads it.
How do I cancel my subscription?
If you subscribed on the website, open Account and use the plan card to manage billing. There you can cancel, change plan or update your card. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period you paid for, and you keep access until then. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel in the App Store or Google Play instead.
Can I get a refund?
A first Pro payment can be refunded in full within 14 days if you email us. After that, and for renewals, we don't refund or prorate, but you keep access to the end of the period. Reports can't be refunded once delivered. If a technical problem stopped one arriving, write to us within 7 days. Purchases in the iPhone or Android app are refunded by Apple or Google. Full terms are on the refund policy page.
How do I delete my account?
Open Account, scroll to Delete account and confirm. It happens immediately and can't be undone. It removes your charts, saved places, notes and billing records we hold. If you have an active web subscription, cancel it first or deletion is blocked. Store subscriptions must be cancelled in the store. Prefer email? Write to privacy@elamap.com.
How do I turn off notifications?
Go to Account, then Notifications. You can switch everything off, pause for a while, set quiet hours and a daily limit, or turn push and email on or off for each kind: your sky, your places, finds, reminders, report ready, updates and following.
I bought a plan on the web. Why does the app show me as free?
Plans belong to your account, so sign in to the app with the same account you used on the web. A different email, or a different Google sign-in, makes a different account. If you are sure it is the same one and the plan still doesn't show, email us the account email and we will fix it.
Reports
What is in a report?
A report is a written reading of one place against your chart. The Location Context Report lists the lines around that place, including power lines, crossings, aspect, midpoint and declination lines, Hermetic lots and zeniths, and explains what they mean for you there. Other reports cover relationships, your year, and groups of three to five people. A sample is on the site.
Can I order a report without my birth time?
A Location Context Report can be ordered with an unknown time once you acknowledge that rising sign, houses and angle lines are less reliable. The Human Design, Your Year, Relational and Group reports need a known birth time.
Where do I find my report after buying?
You get a "Report Ready" email and, if you have the app, a push notification. Reports are read inside the app on the Reports page. Reports are available on every plan. If nothing arrives, check spam, then email us.
For practitioners
Can I keep my clients' charts in ELA Map?
Yes. Pro has unlimited charts, and you can mark a chart as a client. Premium holds five charts and the free plan one. You can delete any chart whenever you like, and deleting your account removes them all. For a longer walk-through, read the guide on using ELA Map with clients.
What is Presentation Mode?
Presentation Mode turns the map into a clean full-screen stage for a live reading, with a radial menu instead of panels, guided stops and annotations. It is a Pro feature and works on desktop only. Press Ctrl, Shift and P to enter or leave.
